Fire Season in Northern Nevada
It’s not even the end of June, but after a dry winter, we are already seeing fires in our area. The Angora fire started just south of South Lake Tahoe and has destroyed over 250 homes and burned over 3,100 acres. Thankfully, as of June 29th there has been no loss of human life and no significant injury. The fire is not thought to be arson, however an accidental human cause is suspected. Our entire Northern Nevada area has experienced a very dry winter and now entering a fire season that is already producing some very destructive wildland fire events.
In our local area, the Carson River was shut off to irrigation on June 19th. A normal year may have the Carson River water flowing through the ditch system well into the first or second week in August. This early closure is significant because so many of the agricultural operations in this area depend on river water and the ditch system to irrigate the hay crop. There are very few operations that actually have water rights enabling them to pump water out of the ground for agricultural purposes.
All of our cria are going to be together for the first time in the next couple of days. We started out the year with three of our first seven cria weighing under 14lbs. At these light weights we decided to keep them in our observation pen until they reached 15lbs. All three have made significant gains and are now going to join the “big kids” in the main herd. This should accelerate their development, as they will have more room to run and more playmates to keep up with.
